The Ionic order is one of the three ancient classical orders of classical architecture. The other two canonic orders being the Doric and the Corinthian. The ionic order made its appearance at the beginning of the 6th century B.C. Its name derives from the Ionians.
The Ionians were one of the four ancient Greek tribes. They were settled mostly in the area of Attic in Greece, in the islands of Aegean sea and in the region of Ionia in Asia Minor. The ionic order had small differences from the Doric order, until the 4th century B.C. when it started to be more specific and unique.
The roots of the Ionian order are being found in the stone constructions of the Cyclades , as shown in the Ionian order that is presented in Athens. Generally though, there are too many different styles of ionic order. This is due to the fact that the architects had too much freedom when making their designs, being influenced by their local style.
